In addition to the FreeBSD packages, we used to prepare rpm packages of Nbsp for Fedora Core and, lately, we had chosen CentOS as our reference Linux system. However, as we have mentioned several times elsewhere, we did not have the proper hardware to test thoroughly the Linux (CentOS) port of Nbsp. As a result of this, it was not uncommon that we would create and distribute an rpm package that would later be found to contain errors which are revealed only after a long running period. Nbsp is a not a simple application and the differences between FreeBSD and Linux do not permit to assume that if all goes well in one of them, then it will go well in the other. Testing is needed on both.
This led us to consider two options: forgetting about producing the CentOS rpm's, or acquiring the necessary hardware for testing that port. We opted for the latter.
We now (Oct 2008) have the hardware to run and test the CentOS port properly. However, the rpm packages will not be distributed in the web site. They will be available only on CD, at a cost, because we need to recover the investment and the cost of maintaining the infrastructure for developing and testing the packages.
As mentioned above, the alternative was not to produce the rpm packages at all. We were hoping that the Donations system could give us another alternative but that did not happen. The past donors will receive special privileges.
