Npemwin Virtual Appliance

The ``npemwin virtual appliance'' (npemwinVA) is the name of a package for running npemwin in a Windows computer. Npemwin running in this way is the exact same version that runs under Linux or, more accurately, FreeBSD.

Technically, it is a VMware ``virtual machine'', using FreeBSD as the guest OS. It is a specially configured installation of FreeBSD, together with all the packages required to run npemwin, already installed and configured. The entire npemwinVA package runs in a Windows computer as another program, with exactly the same features of the npemwin package that runs in a FreeBSD computer. Other applications such as MetarWeather and Digital Atmosphere, running on the same or a different computer, can connect to npemwin in exactly the same way as explained elsewhere in the Npemwin manual. These screenshots illustrate the setup.

The requirements for running npemwinVA are the same as for running the nbspVA virtual appliance, except for disk space. NpemwinVA requires no more than about 2GB of free disk space to run. The file npemwinVA.README that accompanies the package has more specific information for running it.

As detailed in that file, the appliance comes with specific networking configuration settings which may have to be modified in accordance to the LAN settings where it will run. For users that would like to get a ready-to-run appliance, the service to build a customized package, configured according to the local settings and the user specifications, is available.
