In short, when the part of the wmo header uniquely identifes a standard model name, it is used. Otherwise, if the
is 7,8,9 (ncep), then the name associated with the or with the is used. Otherwise the name of the
is used. File names - There are two sets of files saved by the gribfilter in the directories /var/noaaport/data/grib/grb /var/noaaport/data/grib/grids In the "grb" directory the individual file names are of the form ___.grb such as, for example gfs_211_2007100812_6h.grb where is the reference time in the grib file, and 6h is the forecast period. The names in the "grids" directory do not contain the forecast period, e.g., gfs_211_2007100812.grb The part is in most cases one of the standard models such as gfs, nam, ruc, or of the form - as in awc-190_2007102619_0h.grb awc-191_2007102619_2h.grb For analysis and/or forecasts the files can be combined as needed. For example, cat 2007100812_gfs_211_*.grb > 2007100812_gfs_211.grb will pick up all the forecast times for that particular model and grid. The files in the "grids" directory are precisely these combinations in which all the individual files of a given model run are combined into one large file mimcking the above step.
